Where have we been???

Well here we are, 3 years after my last post, at the start of another beautiful sunny morning - and about to start another fantastic, low maintenance, Unreal Gardens transformation. This one truly is a challenge to behold as we tackle masses of overgrowth and previous attempts at remedying our customers garden. Big day in 30 degrees heat, but this is why we are so good at what we do. Check bag later on our Facebook page and here to see results of the transformation as it takes shape... More to follow soon.

Beautiful Morning - In Fact It's UNREAL!!

Well what a gorgeous morning we are blessed with today - The suns shining, wind has dropped, birds are singing and there isnt a cloud in sight.

I dont need much of an excuse to get out in the garden at this time of the year but I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that being outdoors in the nice weather we 'occasionally' get makes you feel so much better somehow. I'm sure i've read somewhere that there is actually a scientific reason behind this and it possibly has something to do with sunlight which generates vitamin D in your skin.

Here are 15 facts which you may or may not know about vitamin D and why moderate exposure to sun and the great outdoors is good for you:

1. Vitamin D is produced by your skin in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation from natural sunlight.

2. The healing rays of natural sunlight (that generate vitamin D in your skin) cannot penetrate glass. So you don't generate vitamin D when sitting in your car or home.

3. It is nearly impossible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from your diet. Sunlight exposure is the only reliable way to generate vitamin D in your own body.

4. A person would have to drink ten tall glasses of vitamin D fortified milk each day just to get minimum levels of vitamin D into their diet.

5. The further you live from the equator, the longer exposure you need to the sun in order to generate vitamin D. Canada, the UK and most U.S. states are far from the equator

6. People with dark skin pigmentation may need 20 - 30 times as much exposure to sunlight as fair-skinned people to generate the same amount of vitamin D. That's why prostate cancer is epidemic among black men -- it's a simple, but widespread, sunlight deficiency.

7.Sufficient levels of vitamin D are crucial for calcium absorption in your intestines. Without sufficient vitamin D, your body cannot absorb calcium, rendering calcium supplements useless.

8. Chronic vitamin D deficiency cannot be reversed overnight: it takes months of vitamin D supplementation and sunlight exposure to rebuild the body's bones and nervous system.

9. Even weak sunscreens (SPF=8) block your body's ability to generate vitamin D by 95%. This is how sunscreen products actually cause disease -- by creating a critical vitamin deficiency in the body.

10. It is impossible to generate too much vitamin D in your body from sunlight exposure: your body will self-regulate and only generate what it needs.

11. If it hurts to press firmly on your sternum, you may be suffering from chronic vitamin D deficiency right now

12. Vitamin D is "activated" in your body by your kidneys and liver before it can be used.

13. Having kidney disease or liver damage can greatly impair your body's ability to activate circulating vitamin D.

14. The sunscreen industry doesn't want you to know that your body actually needs sunlight exposure because that realization would mean lower sales of sunscreen products.

15. Even though vitamin D is one of the most powerful healing chemicals in your body, your body makes it absolutely free. No prescription required.

Unreal Walls - Now That's What I Call A Great Idea

Ever looked at that wall in your garden and wished it could be pulled down? Or what about that hideous outbuilding you wish you could wrap in new clothing. Or how about a unique, standalone water feature taking centre stage in your garden or interior landscape?

Unreal Solutions & Unreal Gardens are pleased to announce the introduction of a fantastic new range of technologically advanced products which not only look aesthetically stunning but are real to the touch too. Unreal Masonry Panels are a combination materials which are made up of a 4mm thick layer of crushed marble or stone mixed resin and a High Density Injected Polyurethane Backing.

The combination of these fantastic materials not only improves the aesthetics and realism of the product but also helps insulate from both heat and sound.

Unreal Masonry Panels are far quicker to install than
building traditional walls and can be used on both interior and exterior schemes and designs.

The above images show Our product PR442 - Slate Grey which creates a striking feature in any interior or exterior design scheme due to its faceted shape. Lighting also works incredibly well with PR442 due to its non uniform and irregular shapes and features.

The image above shows our product code PR80 an Off White Marbled Slate Panel

No discerning range of ready made walls would be complete without a Brick Effect wall covering and our PR70 & PR71 Unreal Masonry Panels beautifully replicate a rustic brick look to the eye and to the touch with authentically textured mortar between the brick slips, our Unreal Brick Effect Wall Panels can add a touch of the traditional or bring any design or scheme or is equally befitting in modern minimalist designs.

Available in either red or white - PR70 & 71 are beautiful additions to the range. the image below shows how it can be used to fabulous effect in an ultra modern interior design.

Of course there are many advantages to building with Unreal Wall Panels besides aesthetics - weight is a key advantage and particularly in schemes where the costs involved in getting materials to site can be collossal not to mention barely feasible.

Intensive Green Roof designs can massively benefit from the inclusion of Unreal Wall Panels and can add a new dimension to this growing industry and one which we particularly intend to embrace.

The Unreal Solutions...

The new season for artificial grass has started really well for Unreal Gardens. Lots of new and diverse enquiries from around the UK and other countries too. We hope to spend some time through the winter months in warmer countries carrying out similar fabulous transformations. It isn't just the fantastic transformation in the visual sense that makes an Unreal Garden so attractive, water conservation and management is also a key factor especially as population grows. Our freshwater supplies are becoming more and more scarce and whilst much of our planet is covered in water, much of it is not suitable for the sustenance of life and purification, though possible is extremely costly. Much of the fresh, drinking water we use can be either recycled or saved altogether if we simply adopt new principles such as utilising grey water for the flushing of toilets etc. Rainwater is also incredibly rich in nutrients which are essential for healthy plant growth. Our parent company, Unreal Solutions Ltd specialise in sourcing and supplying a wide range of ecologically and environmentally beneficial products and systems/components which contribute towards making the world a better place for all and for generations to come.

Great Start To The New Artificial Grass Season...

Well once again history repeats itself and as we look down the end of our empty hosepipes due to the imposed hosepipe ban, the enquiries are flooding in for Artificial Lawn Transformations from across the country.

We've said it before and we are quite obviously biased but there are so many reasons why an Artificial Lawn Transformation by Unreal Gardens makes so much sense - especially in poorly drained or shaded areas.

Here are some images and slideshows of some of our recent installations, we think you'll agree that the transformations are quite literally Unreal....

Willerby Artificial Grass Installation, East Yorkshire.

Hull Artificial Grass Transformation

Poorly drained soil and the remnants of a flower bed once covered with a gravel pathway made this garden pretty much a no-go zone for Mr & Mrs McRobbie

We adjusted the garden levels and tapered off the entrance to the Greenhouse and used MultiEdge Artificial Grass Edging to seperate tyhe new lawn from the stone patio.
The transformation was quite stunning really and both Mr & Mrs McRobbie are thrilled with their new, low maintenance lawn.

Mrs McRobbie also set her heart on a special tree which grows to produce a wide canopy and asked us to create a tree pit exactly central in the new lawn and the picture on the right shows how we achieved this using the aluminium landscape edging
We also used the Aluminium edging to differentiate between the different surfaces as shown in this picture

Overall, the transformation of Mr & Mrs McRobbies garden from a muddy, unserviceable garden to a beautiful, low maintenance garden, is quite stunning leaving our customers with little to worry nabout besides how often to water their tomatoes in their greenhouse.

Artificial Grass for 2012

Well the cold hard winter we were threatened with at the end of summer last year seems to have passed the most of us by fortunately although I'm sure the folks of Scotland have had just about enough of it coming and going now. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if the snow came and stayed, but when it comes for a day or even an hour or so and causes chaos and then disappears leaving nothing but mess it kind of ingratiates even the most tolerant of people.

We did take some Rock Salt into stock in preparation and I am told that we will be on the receiving end of the snow at some point it's just a matter of when, so if you do find yourself stuck, quite literally, give us a shout, we'll get you out!!

Artificial Grass 2012

New year, new developments - never one to stand still and progressing the development of Unreal Solutions we will be working alongside other Artificial Grass manufacturers and importers to ensure we are at the top of our game and are able to offer our customers the right product, at the right price, at the right time.

We not only supply artificial grass from our own range, but we also install other grasses should our customers and clients wish to source their own.

Our nationwide installation services is also now beginning to expand with our growing number of appointed contractors starting to incorporate our products and branding into their own business. If you are a contractor interested in working with us and building the Unreal branding into your business, contact us to see what we can do for you to help your business grow.

Green Roofing

As we move further into the new year, our products and services will evolve further with Unreal Solutions developing more mutually beneficial synergies. The next level of service we plan to build in to our portfolio is Green Roof installations and supplies.

Having spent many years seeing the evolution of these environmentally beneficial building improvements the Unreal Gardens/Unreal Solutions company ethos is befitting to what the whole purpose of Green Roof installations is all about.

We plan to offer the three main types of Green Roof:

  • Extensive (or Bio Diverse)
  • Semi Intensive (or Extensive)
  • Intensive
Extensive Green Roofs are a simple yet effective way of reintroducing wildlife back into urban areas with the minimum amount of maintenance being required. The flora and fauna tends to be self sufficient and none dependent on utilities for sustainability.

Semi Intensive Green Roofs or (semi extensive) are systems or installations which are somewhere between Intensive and Extensive and require periodic or moderate levels of maintenance and may also incorporate some dependence on utilities such as water and electricity.

Intensive Green Roofs are essentially complex landscapes and gardens/ environments which are constructed on top of buildings which can be accessible and utilised by people. Schemes vary in complexity from a simple lawn type area, to outdoor gymnasiums, waterfalls, skate parks, cycle tracks, ornate flower gardens and much more besides. These schemes require a great deal of maintenance and are often complex to install with great dependence on utilities and water requirements.

Unreal Show Garden & New Developments

Our first month in our new show garden and warehouse/workshop has gone really well. Lots of new people have stopped by offering encouraging comments and taken away a little more than they originally came with. Its still amazes me how many people still come and ask questions like, "Will that grow any bigger than that" or  "Where can I learn to prune them and feed them properly" It's all kind of tantamount to what our whole ethos is - Unreal, being fantastic as well as artificial.

We anticipated being fairly quiet on the Artificial Grass Installation side of the business, but I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised. I think that more and more people want their gardens to be usable all year round instead of constrained to just spring and summer. More and more people are taking up our decking covering service, which if your garden is anything like mine then during the winter months it is like an ice skating rink. If you cover the deck area with our artificial grass (which can be made to size) then the area can still be completely usable and completely safe and then if you so require come spring you can take the grass cover off and have the decking back again.

And for those of you into golf - you can even turn it into your very own putting green!!

December saw us enter into a new partnership with R3 Products of Sheffield who specialise in the manufacture of a range of products using recycled plastics. One of the core products in their range and also that of Unreal Solutions & Unreal Gardens, is the Gravel & Grass Stabilisation System - R Pave. R Pave is one of only a few systems currently available which are truly UK Manufactured and completely unique as well as being patent protected. A great deal of research has gone into the product development and we are pleased to be associated with R3 and have the product included in our portfolio of products and services.

The image above shows R Pave in its various colour offerings from black, to light blue/grey and green making the product suitable for a wide range of surfaces from road planings, pea gravel and flint, to grass reinforcement.

For more information on the product either call in to the Workshop, call us on 01472 349700 or visit our webpage: http://www.unrealgardens.co.uk/Ground-Stabilisation-Systems.html

There is a great deal to be said about these products and much of which has been said time and again, but there is no escaping the fact that they offer a low cost and effective means of installing a truly permeable, low maintenance, system in a quick and efficient manner - it must be good as I've even done my own front garden - complete with Artificial Grass (Images Below)

If you have a project in mind, maybe a driveway extension or a lawn replacement - why not call us and see how we can transform your part of the world?

Anlaby Primary School Outdoor Classroom Project

Well almost a month on from our original post on being tasked to transform a disused area of Anlaby Primary School's grounds into a useable and educational area for children right the way through school to enjoy, we have actually completed the task with the help and support of lots of volunteers, businesses and other local organisations in and around the Hull area.

After much delibertaion and plan amendments, a date was finally set for work to commence and with a generous offer of assistance to get the area cleared from PBS Construction we were left with a blank canvas on which we could get to work to create something rather special.

The large pond which was in one corner of the garden was decided to be reduced in size which also helped with the overall quantity of material which needed to be removed from the site. As the pictures below show although the area was cleared by a considerable amount - we were still left with a large pile of weedy soil and material which needed to be physically moved to a skip which was kindly donated by Sam Allon Contracts in Hull.

The Area Before Work Began

The Mound Left After Intial Clearing by PBS Construction
The brief was simple - the group wanted to create something which would be beneficial for the children to use and enjoy which would contain a range of features and different areas for educational value. It was decided that the pond would be made into a quadrant shape and would be gated and fenced off for safety reasons. It was also decided that there needed to be a hard wearing - practical 'Carpet' kind of area for the children to sit on and be taught but in keeping with the garden theme. Raised Beds were also decided to be a feature within the garden to enable the school children to get hands on experience of actually growing their own plants and vegetables. Greenhouses were obtained through the equipment for schools programme from a local supermarket, and a planted area was also decided needed to be present.

Through consultation with the project co-ordinators - Sam Harrod and Debbie Straker, the various businesses and organisations all put in their own area of expertise and we at Unreal Gardens were tasked with creating the teaching area and the pathway leading to the various parts of the Garden Classroom.

The whole project relied upon the support and assistance of volunteers and donations of materials and services to complete the tasks at hand. A full list of these volunteers and organisations involved can also be seen below.

More pictures of the project taking shape.

The first task was to level the area for the artificial grass base

Volunteers - Mick Stobart & Bob Allen getting stuck in
With the subsoil levelled it was then time to add the edging to mark out the perimeter of the Teaching Area. We chose to use Rite Edge Aluminium Landscape Edging for all the edges within the garden due to its low maintenance and long lasting properties as well as its flexibility and versatility.

Rite Edge temporarily in place

Next came the weed suppressant membrane and sub base balancing layer followed by the sand base material

Membrane in sand being delivered by Mr Bob Allen over the precisely built bridge

With the sand base prepared and compacted it was then time to fit the top quality Sensation Artificial Grass from Tiger Turf. The total area to be covered with grass was 60sqm and in the middle of this area was a raised manhole cover. We cut out this shape and loosely laid the grass to cover so as to enable easy access to the drain beneath.

Artificial Grass Loosely laid

Once the grass was down we then began to mark out the pathways. The raised Beds had already been built and placed level, The spoil heap had all but been removed and levelled into the surrounding area so all that remained once the pathway had been marked out was to remove the material, fit the path edging, lay more weed suppressant membrane, and then lay the recycled Ecoscape Rubber Mulch pathway suarfacing material.

Pathway Edging Fitted

Pathway Membrane In Place

Rubber Surfacing Being Laid

Pathway Complete - Stakes Ready To Come Out

With the whole area more or less completed all that remains is for the planting to be carried out ready for the grand unveiling.

Being part of this whole project and creating something for all to enjoy was a great pleasure and we would like to express our thanks and gratitude to the PTA Group of Anlaby Primary School for inviting Unreal Gardens to take part in in such a fantastic transformation.

Multi Edge Artificial Grass Edging System

This evening I'd like to talk a little about our fantastic new Artificial Grass edging system - Multi Edge....

Multi Edge is a fantastic new, uniquely versatile, real and artificial turf edging system. Ironically the product was developed by a plasterer with no links to the landscape or horticultural markets whatsoever. It was only when I myself was given the opportunity to try the product in a variety of applications that I began to realise its unique properties and versatility.

Multi Edge is based on a low profile, L shaped section. in its supplied state, Multi Edge is perfectly straight and though L shaped with an upstand of just 20mm, is capable of coping with vertically undulating ground levels which is something no other landscape edging can currently manage.

The features don't stop there though because the base of Multi Edge is slotted which allows for the 'spine' of the product to be broken or cut enabling horizontal flexibility too - again unrivalled by any other edging system currently available.

Yes there are a multitude of edging systems currently available in a myriad of materials, and we supply many of them - not least of all the brilliant aluminium Rite Edge range of landscape edgings - but there are few products which can equal Multi Edge in the plastic edging ranks.

Because of its 20mm low profile, Multi Edge is excellent for use as an artificial grass edging product as can be seen in the pictures below:

Multi Edge is also ideal for use on a variety of surfaces and can be nailed, screwed or glued onto practically any kind of surface.

For more details on this amazingly unique product visit the website here where the product can be ordered online.

We truly believe there is no other edging system quite like Multi Edge which is capable of so much at such low relative cost.

Contact Us with your enquiry for any of the products from Unreal Solutions Ltd.
