Unreal Show Garden & New Developments

Our first month in our new show garden and warehouse/workshop has gone really well. Lots of new people have stopped by offering encouraging comments and taken away a little more than they originally came with. Its still amazes me how many people still come and ask questions like, "Will that grow any bigger than that" or  "Where can I learn to prune them and feed them properly" It's all kind of tantamount to what our whole ethos is - Unreal, being fantastic as well as artificial.

We anticipated being fairly quiet on the Artificial Grass Installation side of the business, but I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised. I think that more and more people want their gardens to be usable all year round instead of constrained to just spring and summer. More and more people are taking up our decking covering service, which if your garden is anything like mine then during the winter months it is like an ice skating rink. If you cover the deck area with our artificial grass (which can be made to size) then the area can still be completely usable and completely safe and then if you so require come spring you can take the grass cover off and have the decking back again.

And for those of you into golf - you can even turn it into your very own putting green!!

December saw us enter into a new partnership with R3 Products of Sheffield who specialise in the manufacture of a range of products using recycled plastics. One of the core products in their range and also that of Unreal Solutions & Unreal Gardens, is the Gravel & Grass Stabilisation System - R Pave. R Pave is one of only a few systems currently available which are truly UK Manufactured and completely unique as well as being patent protected. A great deal of research has gone into the product development and we are pleased to be associated with R3 and have the product included in our portfolio of products and services.

The image above shows R Pave in its various colour offerings from black, to light blue/grey and green making the product suitable for a wide range of surfaces from road planings, pea gravel and flint, to grass reinforcement.

For more information on the product either call in to the Workshop, call us on 01472 349700 or visit our webpage: http://www.unrealgardens.co.uk/Ground-Stabilisation-Systems.html

There is a great deal to be said about these products and much of which has been said time and again, but there is no escaping the fact that they offer a low cost and effective means of installing a truly permeable, low maintenance, system in a quick and efficient manner - it must be good as I've even done my own front garden - complete with Artificial Grass (Images Below)

If you have a project in mind, maybe a driveway extension or a lawn replacement - why not call us and see how we can transform your part of the world?

Anlaby Primary School Outdoor Classroom Project

Well almost a month on from our original post on being tasked to transform a disused area of Anlaby Primary School's grounds into a useable and educational area for children right the way through school to enjoy, we have actually completed the task with the help and support of lots of volunteers, businesses and other local organisations in and around the Hull area.

After much delibertaion and plan amendments, a date was finally set for work to commence and with a generous offer of assistance to get the area cleared from PBS Construction we were left with a blank canvas on which we could get to work to create something rather special.

The large pond which was in one corner of the garden was decided to be reduced in size which also helped with the overall quantity of material which needed to be removed from the site. As the pictures below show although the area was cleared by a considerable amount - we were still left with a large pile of weedy soil and material which needed to be physically moved to a skip which was kindly donated by Sam Allon Contracts in Hull.

The Area Before Work Began

The Mound Left After Intial Clearing by PBS Construction
The brief was simple - the group wanted to create something which would be beneficial for the children to use and enjoy which would contain a range of features and different areas for educational value. It was decided that the pond would be made into a quadrant shape and would be gated and fenced off for safety reasons. It was also decided that there needed to be a hard wearing - practical 'Carpet' kind of area for the children to sit on and be taught but in keeping with the garden theme. Raised Beds were also decided to be a feature within the garden to enable the school children to get hands on experience of actually growing their own plants and vegetables. Greenhouses were obtained through the equipment for schools programme from a local supermarket, and a planted area was also decided needed to be present.

Through consultation with the project co-ordinators - Sam Harrod and Debbie Straker, the various businesses and organisations all put in their own area of expertise and we at Unreal Gardens were tasked with creating the teaching area and the pathway leading to the various parts of the Garden Classroom.

The whole project relied upon the support and assistance of volunteers and donations of materials and services to complete the tasks at hand. A full list of these volunteers and organisations involved can also be seen below.

More pictures of the project taking shape.

The first task was to level the area for the artificial grass base

Volunteers - Mick Stobart & Bob Allen getting stuck in
With the subsoil levelled it was then time to add the edging to mark out the perimeter of the Teaching Area. We chose to use Rite Edge Aluminium Landscape Edging for all the edges within the garden due to its low maintenance and long lasting properties as well as its flexibility and versatility.

Rite Edge temporarily in place

Next came the weed suppressant membrane and sub base balancing layer followed by the sand base material

Membrane in sand being delivered by Mr Bob Allen over the precisely built bridge

With the sand base prepared and compacted it was then time to fit the top quality Sensation Artificial Grass from Tiger Turf. The total area to be covered with grass was 60sqm and in the middle of this area was a raised manhole cover. We cut out this shape and loosely laid the grass to cover so as to enable easy access to the drain beneath.

Artificial Grass Loosely laid

Once the grass was down we then began to mark out the pathways. The raised Beds had already been built and placed level, The spoil heap had all but been removed and levelled into the surrounding area so all that remained once the pathway had been marked out was to remove the material, fit the path edging, lay more weed suppressant membrane, and then lay the recycled Ecoscape Rubber Mulch pathway suarfacing material.

Rubber Surfacing Being Laid

Pathway Complete - Stakes Ready To Come Out

With the whole area more or less completed all that remains is for the planting to be carried out ready for the grand unveiling.

Being part of this whole project and creating something for all to enjoy was a great pleasure and we would like to express our thanks and gratitude to the PTA Group of Anlaby Primary School for inviting Unreal Gardens to take part in in such a fantastic transformation.

Multi Edge Artificial Grass Edging System

This evening I'd like to talk a little about our fantastic new Artificial Grass edging system - Multi Edge....

Multi Edge is a fantastic new, uniquely versatile, real and artificial turf edging system. Ironically the product was developed by a plasterer with no links to the landscape or horticultural markets whatsoever. It was only when I myself was given the opportunity to try the product in a variety of applications that I began to realise its unique properties and versatility.

Multi Edge is based on a low profile, L shaped section. in its supplied state, Multi Edge is perfectly straight and though L shaped with an upstand of just 20mm, is capable of coping with vertically undulating ground levels which is something no other landscape edging can currently manage.

The features don't stop there though because the base of Multi Edge is slotted which allows for the 'spine' of the product to be broken or cut enabling horizontal flexibility too - again unrivalled by any other edging system currently available.

Yes there are a multitude of edging systems currently available in a myriad of materials, and we supply many of them - not least of all the brilliant aluminium Rite Edge range of landscape edgings - but there are few products which can equal Multi Edge in the plastic edging ranks.

Because of its 20mm low profile, Multi Edge is excellent for use as an artificial grass edging product as can be seen in the pictures below:

Multi Edge is also ideal for use on a variety of surfaces and can be nailed, screwed or glued onto practically any kind of surface.

For more details on this amazingly unique product visit the website here where the product can be ordered online.

We truly believe there is no other edging system quite like Multi Edge which is capable of so much at such low relative cost.

Recycled Rubber Mulch

We are pleased to announce the inclusion of our Unreal, recycled rubber products to our range of professional, low maintenance portfolio.

There are 2 main products within the range - a mulch type product, and a fine shred. The mulch product is available in a range of colours which can be used simply as a loose laid mulch or in conjunction with our resin binder to bond the chips and shreds together which can then be trowelled in place.

The fine shred we offer can be used to help feed and reinforce lawn areas, improve drainage and encourage root growth. The compaction and expansion of the shred when applied to the lawn quite literally allows the root structure to breathe drawing essential air and nutrients to exactly where they are needed.

Our recycled rubber shreds are also ideal as a rubber infill product for artificial or synthetic sports surfaces and are available in either 10kg or bulk bag qtys.

Unreal Solutions will also soon be offering an installation service for the application of Resin Bonded Rubber Mulch and Rubber Infilling and for Artificial Sports Pitches. for more information do not hesitate to contact us

Volunteer Garden Transformation Project For Hull School

We have been asked to get involved with a Hull primary school to help transform a currently disused and somewhat overgrown part of the school grounds.

The picture above shows what we are tasked with and gives us a fantastic opportunity in which to showcase exactly what we can do with a bit of imagination and a lot of help and determination.

The aim of the project is to create an "Outdoor Classroom" something which can be used by the children to explore and learn and enjoy. The area already has a pond built into it although in a sad state of repair, and also features a rather fantastic "Wildlife Mound" which has all manner of wild flowers, insects and butterflies which many architects are now trying to recreate in towns and cities on high rise roofs. We plan to make the most of these features and at the same time create new areas within the Garden Classroom whereby children and students can interact with nature and get hands on experiece of how things grow and transform throughout the year.

Below is an early plan of what we would like to achieve and all the while using low maintenance and environmentally sensitive products and materials to create this new and exciting space.

What this space for more updates and information on how this project takes shape....

What a month!!!

Well, what an incredible month it's been some may say even Unreal!! We ended June with the 2011 Lincolnshire Show which we treated as our official if somewhat belated launch event. We had the help and support of Tina O Brien a well known and highly respected serial entrepreneur from Scarborough who cut the ribbon to the stand.

I have to say a massive thank you to my mother in law Wendy, Brother in law Guy, and great friends Nick Heywood, George & Emma Fulton and Dawn Nicholson for the parts they all played in helping us make the show the success that it was. And last but by no means least my amazing wife Nina whom without her, none of this would have been possible. Wendy, Nick, Guy, Nina and Dawn all worked tirelessly in what were incredibly long days fetching, carrying and indeed selling on the stand. Guy was an absolute trooper all the way through too helping with the construction of the stand in what almost turned out to be a disaster as the wind decided to convert our Gazebo into an Unreal work of twisted art. Nick proved that as a Salesman through and through, it doesn't matter what it is you are selling, its the relationship you develop with your customers that determines your success.

Dawn baked some absolutely amazing cup cakes which went down a real treat along with the Champagne we offered as part of our launch - we really do think you should start up the Unreal Cup Cakes side of the business Dawn - quite possibly the best cakes we have had - even if we ate them for breakfast lunch and dinner!!!

The garden we built was extremely well received - some may even say it was too good as some people didn't actually grasp that practically everything we had on display was of an artificial nature. Our Unreal Hanging Baskets were very popular so much so we are on our second stock turn already, as were our incredibly realistic topiary bushes.

The lawn we had laid out also drew plenty of attention from visitors and their dogs and we received some very promising enquiries and leads. So all in all we have to say a resounding success even if the weather did spoil itself somewhat. Thank you to all our visitors who braved the rain and thank you to all who placed orders with us, we hope you are completely satisfied with your purchases and hopefully all our customers think the garden transformations we have carried out across Lincolnshire on their behalf are truly Unreal and are being enjoyed to the max.

Green Fingered - Or Deadly Touch??

I have to say that by no means am I a florist or very "green fingered" but now I've invested in some Unreal Tree's & Hanging Baskets, I don't need to be either....woohoo!!!

Yes I can turn my hand to a bit of tree lopping and I have even managed to nurture an almost dead miniature rose tree back to health!!! I am quite good at creating or designing minimalist kind of spaces, that are practical and largely enjoyable, but I do love to see flowers tree's and greenery in my garden. Our garden is largely decked out at the rear, which is fabulous for those balmy summers evenings and great for entertaining (Frank Sinatra eat your heart out!!) but we have very few places or areas where we could actually "Grow" anything give or take the odd hole in the decking where the weeds seem to make their way through, and with that in mind we seem to spend hundreds of pounds every year on potted plants, tree's, bushes and anything else which seems a good idea at the time when we all venture out of hibernation come the long awaited Springtime, and every year those said plants and flowers die either due to harsh winters (see all the lifeless palm tree's dotted around lately) or long drought periods through summer.

Well this year we decided to turn a leaf (no pun intended) and practice what we preach. We've added a range of artificial hanging baskets to the Unreal range of products as well as a range of artificial tree's. We are also in the process of setting up an artificial tree hire company for those customers who need products to simply borrow short term.

I have to say though, you'd be hard pressed to be able to tell the difference (from a distance of course) between the real thing and the Unreal, low cost, zero maintenance, re-usable and ultra realistic alternatives. The only thing missing is the bee's which are sadly in decline, but on the same token if the bee's are gone then so too are the wasps - and that is by no means a sad thing in my way of looking at things.

I have a certain fascination with Bee's and being an Unreal fan as I quite obviously am, I am actually working on what I can do to counter act this contradiction of interests. I did quite a lot of research into Roof Gardens or Green Roofs as they are also known, and one of the terminologies used to classify green roofs is Bio diverse or Extensive and Brown Roofs. These feature what can only be described as wild flower and meadow land but high up in our towns and cities, attracting all kinds of insects, birds and wildlife which also require minimal maintenance - which is what Unreal Gardens or should we say Unreal Solutions is really all about - Creating low maintenance landscapes and open spaces using a variety of products and systems which either enhance, protect or benefit the environment in some way shape or form and ultimately for the greater good.

So for all those who are screaming at me for being partly responsible for the demise of our planet, we have to stop and say what are the real problems which lie beneath and what can we do to resolve these issues?

  • Global Warming
  • Water Shortages
  • Insect Decline
  • Landfill Excess
  • Food Shortages
  • Fossil Fuel Shortages
The list goes on and on, and for every answer there is a negative to compound it. We can't take on everything at once, but we can make a difference bit by bit, and its that what I want us to do at Unreal Solutions - Make A Difference, and with you our customers, we will.

Ground Reinforcement & Gravel Stabilisation

Continuing on the theme of Ground Stabilisation systems, I figured I would write about the other type of products we also offer which fall into the ground protection product family.

Cellular systems have come a long way since the early days of the hugely heavy concrete systems. There are literally hundreds of products on the market these days all claiming to do this better or that better, or can carry this much weight or can tolerate that much heat expansion, and the fact of the matter is that yes they can, and many of the products are generically similar in design - quite who copied who and which patents were infringed first is the subject of many long and expensive legal wranglings, and most of which really won't make a jot of difference, because as one goes another will reappear claiming to be an enhancement to its predecessor.

The point you have to ask is:

"Will it do what you want it to do, and what will be the intended infill?"

It is a valid point that some products perform better with different infill materials - by which I mean gravel or loose aggregate as opposed to grass. And what easily defines this is the make up of the cell structure. A predominantly open cell base is far better for grass than that of a predominantly closed structure as the root system has a better opportunity to pass through to the subsoil beneath. Whereas a closed cell structure is better for gravel and aggregate as it is more difficult for the aggregate to pass through.

(Above: Closed Cell With Aggregate Infill)

As mentioned there are quite literally hundreds of cellular ground reinforcement products currently available and Unreal Solutions offer 2 products too. We chose two as in our experience one is particularly suitable as a Grass Paving System while the other is ideal as a Gravel Stabilisation System. When contacting us we suggest mentioning which most interests you and we will endeavour to help you with this.

We also have a team of installers who can operate in and around North East Lincolnshire to install these systems, and we can also supply all the necessary materials too which you may need to complete your project (membranes, edgings, fixing pins etc)

These paving systems are completely permeable allowing water to pass through naturally to the subgrade beneath and can also help to alleviate storm water run off which at times inundates our rainwater drainage system, and being made largely from recycled materials, these products are also environmentally friendly too.

One critical point as with all systems like these, they are only as effective as the base on which they are laid. The more emphasis that is put on preparation beforehand the better the product will perform. If corners are cut on sub base materials for example using broken bricks and flagstones instead of good quality sub base material the product is likely to fail. and the same if there is no membrane used to separate the subsoil from the sub base, the base will migrate and the sub base will fail resulting in a disappointing and uneven surface.

Call us to discuss further, we are here to help and advise accordingly.

More blogs on products to follow shortly, thanks for reading.

Grass Protection Mesh

Well having had such a fabulous week and a busy one at that I figured it was time to add to the Unreal Blog again, and I have to say I wasn't sure what to Blog about first, so there may well follow another post after this one.

I'd like to talk a little about another fabulous range of products we can offer which are suitable for a wide range of applications and not least of all the domestic homeowners. Grass Protection Mesh is a fantastic product which is very simple to install and very effective at doing what it says on the tin - protecting grass!!

The system is a kind of stiff, extruded netting which when laid on top of existing grass, protects the root system from damage caused by frequent trafficking be it pedestrian or vehicular. The product is a none invasive system meaning little or no prior preparation is required, simply measure the total area required and then decide which variety is best for the application at hand.

Our Grass Protection Mesh does not require any planning permission and can be installed very quickly and providing the area is not over used and the grass is allowed to grow prior to first use - the system will save time and money and put otherwise inaccessible land to good use for overspill parking areas, events, golf courses parks and gardens, and other areas at risk from frequent trafficking.

The grass must be allowed to grow through the mesh as it is this which provides the mesh with its optimum strength binding the grass sytem together and strengthening the surface tension. Spring & summer are the ideal times to install due to rapid grass growth, although it can be installed during winter, but usage must be ket to a minimum until the grass grows through.

The picture above really shows what happens when the are is used too quickly. What needs to happen here is that the whole area be cordoned off and re seeded and left untouched for probably 12 months until the new grass area is completely sewn into the mesh.

Grass protection meshes can be great for the homeowner too as children gradually grow and learn to drive, then suddenly the two car driveway needs to become 3 or maybe even 4 car acceptable. If you have a front lawn (and lets face it - who actually "uses" their front lawn these days) then by adding grass protection mesh you are quickly and affordably extending your driveway and making maximum use of your garden space.

Ideal for agricultural use too for farm tracks, and equine uses as well as field gateways etc, and also for local authority use, for making their parks and gardens more useable and accessible to all.

For more information or to discuss any requirements you may have why not call us on 01472 235619 or drop us and email to sales@unrealgardens.co.uk We would be only too pleased to hear from you and offer our unequalled service and recomendations without any obligation.

More coming soon.

Unreal Friday!!

Well what a day that was!! I have to say that I am constantly amazed at how the whole internet networking thing works. Having being involved in digital marketing for some time and being behind successful websites Rite Edge.com, treespirals.com, and Hexapath.com I would say I thought I was getting old hat at this sort of stuff - but Oh how wrong I was!!!

Websites are great and an absolute must for practically any business these days, but its no longer enough to be just a website, it has to be functional, it has to be good looking and most of all it has to flaunt itself to the ever incredible search engine - and the rules for doing so are ever changing!!
I set up Unreal Solutions with all of the above at the forefront of my conscience. I wanted something for everyone, the company is specialist in its field of lanscaping product supplies and focussed in what it does, its website needs to be attractive yet organised and functional, its staff are friendly, professional and knowledgeable, it will offer a wide range of products but only the best products for the task at hand - customers will be able to visit and we will visit them and above all else we will listen to their requirements and offer choice and a service to find whatever it is the customer is looking for - even if we don't currently sell it!!

We see the growth and popularity of social and proessional networking platforms Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, and we have a new opportunity to present our businesses and its offerings and it is predicted that Facebook will become the biggest business ever overtaking the likes of Google in the not too distant future which when you consider that it was conceived in a certain young man's bedroom less than 10 years ago puts some perspective on the way things are shaping up. How many times have you seen facebook mentioned on TV ads these days?

We placed Facebook and Twitter high on our priority list to develop the company name at a very early stage and linked all the business accounts, the website and the company blog together to continue its exponential growth and considering we only really kicked off vigorously pushing the new company in March, the growth is nothing short of astounding. I have to confess the brilliance behind this is my amazing and talented wife Nina, without whom none of which would have been possible so soon.

I like to think between us we created something very special and ultimately something which will evolve to include different businesses operating in different markets and industries - but for the time being the objective is heavily focussed on growing the part of the business called Unreal Gardens which specialises in low maintenance and artificial garden and landscape product supplies. There's a long way to go yet, but it's not about completing the journey, its about enjoying the ride, and the longer the ride, the better as far as we're concerned. We hope to make the Unreal experience as interesting and enjoyable for everyone we interact with.
- U.S.

Unreal News & Updates

Unreal Gardens continues to go from strength to strength and as the machine romps on, so do the opportunities keep rolling in. Rome wasn't built in a day goes the old cliche, but we can lay a damned good artificial lawn in a day I can tell you. Just take a look at some of the case studies on the Unreal Gardens website to see what we mean.

Our services and offerings will be expanding soon to include Garden Design. We can already offer this service locally throughout Northern Lincolnshire with the help of a certain well known Garden Designer. John Cavill has won several medals at several prestigious events over the years with his amazing garden designs and his business continues to grow in several directions. John created Simply Gardening for Schools in recent years on the back of his first succesful business Simply Gardening and offers advice in through his column in the local newspapers on all things horticultural. Here's a link to John's website: www.simplygardening.co.uk

John kindly offered to help us this year at the 2011 lincolnshire Show where we will be exhibitting our fantastic range of Artificial Grass and a range of our Artificial Trees and Plants as well as some of our other  excellent landscape enhancing or maintenance reducing products - June 22nd/23rd join us on First Avenue, Stand 28 for a look at what we can offer you.

Day 2 RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Here's a round up of all thats good at the prestigious Best of British Flower Shows, RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011:

Record numbers of gold medals were awarded at a "best ever" Chelsea Flower Show today despite a two-month spring heatwave and a judging day storm that threatened to wreak havoc.
Eight gold medals were handed out, one up on last year. Diarmuid Gavin also won his first gold medal for his extraordinary Irish Sky Garden, dominated by a huge crane that lifted an Avatar-inspired "flying pod" 80 feet above the show ground.
The B&Q garden, overlooked by a 30ft tower representing a "vertical allotment", the tallest structure ever to feature at Chelsea, also struck gold.
The Daily Telegraph became the first sponsor in the history of the event to win a hat-trick of best show garden titles. Its calming garden, based on Roman ruins in Libya, beat off competition from "bling" entries that attracted more publicity and led to the event being dubbed the Chelsea Tower Show.
All the designers have struggled with unseasonably warm and dry weather, which brought flowers into bloom before today's public opening, to display their gardens at their best. A deep Atlantic depression which caused high winds yesterday also brought problems as judges did their tours.
Cleve West, designer of the Daily Telegraph's sunken garden, told of how parsnips from his allotment flowered early. The 52-year-old said: "I added the parsnips as a bit of a novelty but they actually flowered early and really added to the garden."
Described as the "Heston Blumenthal of gardening" for his creative flair, West added: "The sculpture is based on the Roman ruins in Libya - it's a magical place and it just makes what is happening there now more sad."
The previous winners for the Telegraph were Andy Sturgeon, who won last year, and Ulf Nordfjell, victor in 2009.
The best urban garden award went to Jamie Dunstan, whose Winds of Change design for Stockton Drilling was dominated by six "turbines" engineered from reclaimed industrial cooling fans. Mr Dunstan, 39, who had only previously won silver, said: "It was a big surprise. I was hoping for Silver Gilt. I had to change the trees because of the wind and the rain. It wasn't easy, they are incredibly heavy."
The garden is made from reclaimed materials including a prison door. Gym flooring still show shoe scuffs from badminton and basketball games.

Chelsea Flower Show 2011

Well it will be well and truly under way, the most prestigious horticultural event of the year - The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, deemed by some as the Greatest Flower Show on Earth.

Unfortunately I wont be attending this year - the first year in which I won't be physically there in 8 years. I love the razzle dazzle of Chelsea and the hum of the crowds, some quietly talking among themselves others completely bewildered by what can only be described as a feat of modern ingeniousity. It constantly amazes me how they manage to get so much into what is such a relatively small space - but then having said that, surely thats what most garden design is about - the optimum use of space to achieve the greatest of effect using a multitude of materials, and more and more these days in what has to be with a sympathetic lean towards the environment. I'm not entirely sure of what the weather is doing over the Chelsea Hospital Grounds, but the wind has been b;lowing a real old Hoollie and we have had a little rain here in dry old Lincolnshire this afternoon - at last some may say, but no matter the weather, there's little to spoil what can only be described as an experience like no other.
